Arts Beyond the Classroom

A group blog for families to share experiences of culture in London.

from Naombh | Comment (1) | Apr 12, 2009 Naombh During this week Eelyn Winston and Jonathan visited Donna and Ryan in their home ,me and Naombh went to give Donna moral support , I took on my usual role of tea maker. My plan being to stay well away from the camera! For me that was the only problem I had with this project I have always been terrified of cameras and avoid them whenever possible.I explained to Eelyn that during our trips out I found myself panicking about thinking of something relevant to say afterwards and  I know I did not contribute as much as I could have done.Of course as soon as I got home I had all sorts of opinions and Donna and I chatted for ages about ours and the children' s feelings.I am really pleased to have been a part of this project and found it a very positive experience. We have decided to take Ryan and Naombh somewhere at least once a month and have figured that with our children its best sometimes just to get on a bus or tube and just see what's going on ,sort of exposing them to the arts accidentally there is so much to see and do.We have also learned that we don't have to be experts on anything and shouldn't be put off because of our lack of knowledge of various fields,no one is going to test us afterwards. I knew the staff ,children and parents of Lauriston school were lovely and can only say the same for everyone we met from Jubilee school.Eelyn and her crew were wonderful and so patient, especially with me!and iv'e actually got interested in film making and have figured out how to use the camcorder! feeling far more at ease on the other side of the camera.Best wishes to everyone involved in this project.

from Naombh | Comment (0) | Mar 9, 2009 Naombh It was a very tricky start to the day, organising members of the family left at home, who, regardless of our activities would still want their Sunday roast. It was lovely to take our seats and turn the mobile off.Naombh and I loved the Peter rabbit it was brilliant to hear it retold so well by Chris Jarvis alongside the beautiful music of Stephen Mc Neff.I think the fact that Dangerous Creatures was a world premiere  was lost on Naombh, but I thought that was really special.Naombh liked the Army Ants best and my favourite was Big Black Bear. The Firebird Suite finale was beautiful.Angie Newman was so good and showed the children that everyone can appreciate music. We arrived home looking like drowned rats just to continue with the animal theme.

from Naombh | Comment (1) | Mar 4, 2009 Naombh We really had fun at the music workshop in Jubilee school,we had to compose some music which represented the picture of tigers we were given and the rest of the groups had to guess what the animal was. They all did! It was a bit hard at first to know what instruments to choose and to decide what actions the tiger was doing.Kerry was a brilliant conductor and Donna and mum made loads of noise to represent two tigers fighting.

"Going to the dance was a fantastic experience. My grandmother who was very formal and austere used to take me to the ballet and i absolutely hated it"

"I think what i have learnt the most about this project is.......wait for it....is SELF BELIEF. If an artist or anyone, writes, sings, dances or sculpts etc and believes they have done a good job, well thats all that matters....i have doubted myself in the past, lacked believing in myself and what i can achieve....”
