For the past few months, my daughter has been working as an intern at Sadlers Wells. It has made us so much more aware of what a lot of brilliant dance (and a bit of rubbish too). We have been to see just about everything that was on over the autumn season and really got into dance.
I never thought there was much to contemporary dance before and would often get a bit bored because I didn't want to get into it. However, I now love it. I realise that the more you see of something (an artform) the more you get into the necessary way of thinking and looking to make sense of it.
The most recent performance we saw was Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake. It was fantastic. Totally unexpected and a real feast. It used the original score by Prokofiev but the whole cast was male (nearly).
What completely blew my mind was the swans when they first arrived. They were so menacing and dangerous. They were exactly what swans should be. Not tottering rows of beuatiful young women. Fab!
Go and see it if you get a chance.
