When was the last time you danced......?

Photos from Dance Review at Jubilee

Here are some photos from the dance review session we had at Jubilee after the trip to Sadlers Wells. For those of you who weren't there, you'll see what we got up to! So....a bit of dancing and jumping up and down, lots of chatting and writing down what we thought about dance and Sadlers Wells. You'll also see some of the children at Jubilee spying on us through the window...i think they wished they were taking part.

Brilliant Batik-ing

Thank you SO much Jodie and thank you to all of you who came. Jodie was a superb host and we've all learned how to do batik...with some wonderful successes! If I can get these pictures attached then you can see them (but you know me and technology!). It was great to get together. Looking forward to the BFI on the 25th. Have a great half term and be creative! Ok I can't get the pics on..will check with Eelyn for support. Hopefully they'll be on soon - watch this space!

Extra Batik Workshop

Hi everybody

hope all is going well...it seems ages since we last met and ages since we will meet again. Jodie has been so kind and offered to do a Batik workshop for all of us. I know that we are some way from L, but if you are from Lauriston and would like to join us on the 11th Feb please do so.

The dance workshop and sadlers wells

Chrissie on the dance workshop

still enthusing to friends bout the project. hip hop dance workout where i was convinced i was 24 years old with the flavour.the film footage will obviously shed some reality on my dancer imaginings. had bone ache for few days after.

Ivan on the dance workshop

it was good fun and i enjoyed doing it because it was nice to know how much work people who really do dance have to put in. i wasn't sure about the ballet. the reflecting thing was a bit weird but very funny because when i laughed my mum laughed. i really enjoyed it.

Ivan on Sadlers Wells

It was amazing that the breakdancers could move like they did. absolutely mental. the flamenco was so fast but i didn't like the ballet. it's for girls and the boy dancers wear funny clothes. their trousers are too tight. i thought it was great to go with everyone and talk to everyone about what we thought about it. we had to really do some travelling at night which was funny and a good adventure.

Going to the dance was a fantastic experience. My grandmother who was very formal and austere used to take me to the ballet and i absolutely hated it I associate swan lake with being told off for fidgeting. I loved all the dance. whilst watching i wished i had the physical capacity to be so expressive.  it must be wonderful yet hard work. The traditional ballet still left me a bit cold. It seems so formal and repressed because the movement is so precise but the modern dance was amazing. playing with theatre, light, movement and sound. It left me with a head full of ideas and thoughts. To be so mesmerized by a performance is a fantastic thing. It was good to do something i would not normally chose to do.

Being with the group was great too. I think that we are beginning to realise what a positive experience being part of this project is.

The Creative Party at Sadlers Wells

Well, Ive been awake since 2 a.m...stressing and thinking about last night!

It was amazing...but I feel like I'm hosting a Creative Party. You know those parties where you really want people to have a good time? You wonder if everyone will turn up, will they get along? Well, I feel like that. I really want people to believe in the creative arts as I do. Watching the dance last night was wonderful for me and for some of the others who told me how they felt...but suppose the others  hated it? Suppose it meant nothing? Suppose that the first dance was too pretentious? If someone didn't like it I may be responsible for putting them off for life! And dance, for me, really is a powerful storyteller and way of expressing yourself.

The Hip Hop was extraordinary. I always thought I was too old for hip hop; I never 'got' breakdancing...I thought it was all for young people, I would never have gone to a performance like that. But last night was extraordinary - having done the workshop intro I know how hard it is to keep going...it truly is for the young and the fit  to actually do - but to watch was mind blowing.

Big, Big thanks to all at Sadlers Wells - to Rachel and to Cheryl for all their support. And thank you to all of our parents and children for braving the weather and shocking transport system and coming to the first of our Creative Parties!

"I think what i have learnt the most about this project is.......wait for it....is SELF BELIEF. If an artist or anyone, writes, sings, dances or sculpts etc and believes they have done a good job, well thats all that matters....i have doubted myself in the past, lacked believing in myself and what i can achieve....”

"We have decided to take Ryan and Naombh somewhere at least once a month and have figured that with our children its best sometimes just to get on a bus or tube and just see what's going on ,sort of exposing them to the arts accidentally there is so much to see and do"
