An Introduction to the Film

I've spent the last 3 months documenting Arts Beyond the Classroom. 20 parents and their children from 2 primary schools in Hackney meeting up on a regular basis to explore the arts in their own home town.

I'm a filmmaker based in East London who's spent a lot of time making films about young people and working with local schools. Documenting this project however has been something quite special. It's a simple idea ..... kids spend some time with their mums or dads going to the theatre, art exhibitions, concerts.....they form an opinion about it and arrange the next visit. But as we all know the simplest of ideas can throw up the best surprises....

But why do a project like this? What's stopping people just hanging out at the theatre or meeting up at an art gallery?

Part of the documenting process involved getting the families recording their own experiences using camcorders and writing entries on this blog. Keon's mum Alison is destined to become the internet's next best blogger.......Ryan's mum Donna has been the world's most reluctant blogger and when  Anita's daughter Naya can type as fast as she can talk she'll have something to blog about everything.

Before each visit to an arts venue the group took part in a workshop that gave them an insight in to a different art form. We started with filmmaking....

"Going to the dance was a fantastic experience. My grandmother who was very formal and austere used to take me to the ballet and i absolutely hated it"

"I think what i have learnt the most about this project is.......wait for it....is SELF BELIEF. If an artist or anyone, writes, sings, dances or sculpts etc and believes they have done a good job, well thats all that matters....i have doubted myself in the past, lacked believing in myself and what i can achieve....”

"We have decided to take Ryan and Naombh somewhere at least once a month and have figured that with our children its best sometimes just to get on a bus or tube and just see what's going on ,sort of exposing them to the arts accidentally there is so much to see and do"
